ON BARCELONA
Barcelona’s
personality reflects an ever-changing multifarious image,
which is based upon a social mosaic constructed during a two
thousand-year historical process that has made the city unique.
Barcelona’s ancient past is projected into its present
through its buildings and streets. This, in turn, accounts for
its rich cultural and artistic heritage. In the 19th Century,
Barcelona’s fabulously well-structured layout designed by
Lesseps contributed to the spreading of the already
flourishing Modernist architecture in the city. This 19th
Century heritage, still one of the best preserved in the world,
will be celebrated in 2002 with the 150th birth Anniversary of
Antonio Gaudi, the outstanding Modernist architect. With the
1992 Olympic Games, Barcelona carried out widespread
modernisation which, combined with its well-kept appearance,
renewed its international image enhancing the city’s
presence on the international scene.

The Conference and

de Barcelona, situated inside the city, close to Plaça Espanya, at the foot of Montjuïch
